Cosby Co-op

For those who love life in the Mountains.

Money circulating multiple times within any economic structure automatically multiplies it's effect within that structure.

It has already been noted that a dollar must circulate 5 times within a community before it gets spent outside that community for that community to be prosperous. It is that kind of economic powerhouse we are creating here at Cosby Cooperative. The nature of our little online community, where all the members communicate directly with each other rather than up and down a hierarchy, is what is called "Web 2.0."

How can Web 2.0 help you?

It's pretty clear the American Economy is going down the toilet. If you use "old fashioned" accounting and include people who have been out of work so long they have used up their benefits or just quite looking, then you get an 18% unemployment average, and still rising. This isn't going to get any better anytime soon.

This means we are going to have to start doing business differently. We need to start making, and consuming, things we need locally, especially food. It means we will have to start businesses without credit. It means we will have to do business at the absolute minimum cost possible. This can be done on the Internet. With a robust online community you can advertise to your local market and set up deals with customers for the price of a dialup connection, and time spent on the net. Dialup can be had for $6.95/mo. Websites with your own domain and 5 pop email accounts can be had for as little as $70/yr. For this reason tens of thousands of Americans are jumping online, and you should be too.

Cosby Co-operative will continue to grow until it has thousands of members, most of them residents of Sevier and Cocke Counties. As a member of the Co-op you have the ear of all those people and should have no problem reaching out to those with an interest in what you have to sell. Products, supplies, produce, skills, there is a huge local market for them. Accepting trades makes us less vulnerable to shocks in the mass economy. Unfortunately it takes time to build a business based on mutual trust so the time to start is now, while you still have the resources.

Get in touch with me here in the comments section of this blog about your ideas for starting or growing your business on the Internet and I'll share my own experience and we can sketch out a path to success.

Disclaimer; I do web design freelance for small and medium businesses. So naturally I would be delighted to add to my client list via the Co-op. But I won't try to sell you a web design deal while we are talking here. The truth is that everything you need to do to set up a website and sell stuff can be learned from the Internet. The problem is that it is time consuming to learn this stuff, and the technology as well as business practices are constantly changing so you need to keep up with new developments. This can be burdensome if you are already at maximum time outlay for your vegetable farm, or what have you. That's where I come in.
